Russia's BESP RTGS processes RUB domestically, but following Western sanctions in 2022 many Russian banks lost SWIFT access and shifted to SPFS (the domestic SWIFT alternative) and CIPS for RUB-CNY transactions. Sberbank, VTB, Gazprombank, and Alfa-Bank retain correspondent relationships in jurisdictions outside the sanctions regime. Cross-border RUB payments typically route via non-sanctioned intermediaries in Armenia, Kazakhstan, Turkey, or China.

Most international SWIFT wires arrive in Russia within 2–5 business days. Payments cleared through correspondent banks may take longer depending on intermediary routing and local cut-off times.
Russia processes large-value interbank settlements through BESP/SPFS. Retail transfers typically use ACH or local clearing networks, while cross-border wires enter via SWIFT.
The primary settlement currency is RUB — Russian Ruble. Foreign-currency wires are converted at the receiving bank's prevailing rate unless a specific currency account is held at the beneficiary institution.
