Ohmyfin responde: Can I cancel a SWIFT payment that's already in progress?

Yes — the sender's bank can issue a recall (camt.056 or MT n92) at any time before the payment is credited to the beneficiary. Once credited (status ACSC / ACCC), recall requires the beneficiary's consent. Recall fees range from EUR 25 to EUR 100 and there is no guarantee of success.

Only the sender's bank can initiate the recall — not the beneficiary, not a third party. The customer instructs the sender's bank, which sends a camt.056 (or in MT format, MT n92) cancellation request to every bank in the chain.

If the payment is still in progress (status ACSP, PDNG, ACWP) the recall usually succeeds within 1-3 business days and the funds are returned (minus correspondent fees of typically EUR 15-30 per leg).

If the payment has already credited the beneficiary (status ACSC or ACCC), the beneficiary's bank cannot debit the account without the beneficiary's permission. The sender must contact the beneficiary directly and ask them to authorise a return.

Common legitimate reasons to recall: wrong account number, duplicate payment, fraud / scam discovered after sending, sanctions concerns. Banks will not recall purely because the customer changed their mind once the funds are in the beneficiary's account.

Track the UETR on Ohmyfin first — if the status is still 'in progress' at any bank in the chain, recall is much more likely to succeed.
