The EU 6th and 8th sanctions packages disconnected Sberbank, VTB, VEB, Otkritie, Promsvyazbank, Rossiya Bank, Novikombank, Sovcombank and others from SWIFT. Tinkoff, Raiffeisenbank Russia, Unicredit Russia and a few smaller banks remain connected.
Even where SWIFT connectivity exists, OFAC, EU and UK sanctions create heavy compliance friction. Every intermediary bank in the chain re-screens — and most US dollar correspondents (JPMorgan, BNY Mellon, Citi) have severely restricted or stopped accepting RUB-related or Russia-origin payments outright.
Practical workarounds people use today: payments via UAE / Turkey / Kazakhstan / Armenia / Georgia banks (with extra steps and longer processing), or non-SWIFT systems like Russia's SPFS or China's CIPS for CNY settlements.
