SWIFT cut-off times by bank and currency (2026)

One of the most misunderstood causes of "delayed" international wires is the RTGS cut-off time. Miss your bank's cut-off by even one minute and the wire sits until the next settlement cycle — sometimes 24 hours later, sometimes over a full weekend. Here is a bank-by-bank, currency-by-currency reference for 2026.

Why cut-off times matter: SWIFT GPI enables real-time messaging, but the actual settlement of funds happens through national RTGS (Real-Time Gross Settlement) systems — Fedwire in the US, TARGET2/T2 in the EU, CHAPS in the UK, BOJ-NET in Japan, etc. These systems have defined operating windows and do not settle outside them. A wire sent at 17:00 London for a USD clearing will wait until the next Fedwire window, which opens the following morning.

USD (US dollar) cut-offs: Fedwire operates Monday–Friday 09:00–18:00 ET (with an early close on Fridays at 18:00 ET; no settlement Saturday or Sunday). JPMorgan Chase international USD cut-off: 16:00 ET. Citi: 15:30 ET for STP (straight-through), 16:30 ET for high-value. BofA: 16:00 ET. Wells Fargo: 16:00 ET. HSBC USA: 15:00 ET for retail, 16:00 ET for commercial. Wires submitted after these times are processed next Fedwire business day.

EUR (euro) cut-offs: TARGET2 / T2 operates 07:00–18:00 CET Monday–Friday. CHAPS in the UK handles EUR SEPA same-day from 08:00–17:00 GMT. Barclays EUR cut-off: 15:30 GMT (UK) or 16:30 CET (Europe). HSBC UK EUR cut-off: 14:00 GMT retail, 16:00 GMT commercial. Deutsche Bank EUR cut-off: 17:00 CET (one of the latest in Europe). BNP Paribas EUR: 17:30 CET.

GBP (British pound) cut-offs: CHAPS operates 06:00–18:00 UK time (17:00 limit for same-day guaranteed). Barclays GBP CHAPS: 17:00 GMT. HSBC GBP CHAPS: 16:00 GMT retail. Lloyds: 15:30 GMT. NatWest: 16:30 GMT. Santander UK: 15:00 GMT (earlier than most — catch them before lunch).

JPY (Japanese yen) cut-offs: BOJ-NET Zengin System operates 08:30–15:30 JST for domestic; for international inbound, Japanese banks post credits during business hours. MUFG cut-off for inbound USD to JPY conversion: 14:00 JST. Mizuho: 15:00 JST. SMBC: 14:30 JST. Same-day JPY from Europe is not possible — European banking time is already JST afternoon.

INR (Indian rupee) / RBI RTGS: RBI RTGS operates Monday–Friday 07:00–18:00 IST, Saturday 07:00–14:00 IST. HDFC INR cut-off for inbound wire credit: 16:00 IST. ICICI: 16:00 IST. SBI: varies by branch but generally 15:00–16:00 IST.

Weekend and holiday impact: the biggest cause of "my wire should have arrived Friday but came Tuesday" is the Friday cut-off effect. In the US, a wire submitted after 16:00 ET on Friday does not hit Fedwire until Monday morning ET, which may be Monday afternoon or Tuesday in the destination country after their local processing. Always aim to submit international wires by midday on Thursday for critical Friday-must-receive situations.

How to ensure your wire makes the cut-off: (a) submit by 12:00 in your bank's local time for same-day processing — this gives buffer for internal approval and sanity-checking. (b) For business-critical payments, confirm the specific cut-off with your bank before submitting. (c) Use the "urgent" or "SWIFT priority" flag if available — some banks have a higher cut-off for urgent wires. (d) Never submit a Friday-afternoon high-value wire without calling your bank first.

Key takeaways

Frequently asked questions

What happens to my wire if I miss the cut-off?

The wire sits in your bank's payment queue and is released at the opening of the next settlement window. For USD on a Friday afternoon, that is Monday morning ET — which means the beneficiary country may see it Tuesday or Wednesday.

Is there a way to guarantee same-day arrival even late in the day?

In some corridors, yes. Some banks offer a "same-day urgent" or "SWIFT express" service with a later cut-off (typically 17:00–18:00 local). Fees are higher. Confirm availability with your bank before relying on it for critical payments.

Do cut-off times apply to incoming wires too?

Yes. Beneficiary banks have their own internal cut-off times for posting credits. A wire that arrives at the beneficiary bank's nostro at 17:30 may not be posted to the customer's account until the next business day, even though the GPI shows ACSC.

Do Wise, Revolut, or Remitly have the same cut-off issues?

Specialist transfer services manage liquidity locally in the destination country, so they are largely not affected by RTGS cut-offs. A Wise transfer can arrive in minutes because Wise already holds the local currency — it is not waiting for a US-to-India RTGS settlement.
