China operates two parallel cross-border infrastructure tracks: SWIFT (for most foreign bank connections) and CIPS (Cross-Border Interbank Payment System), which processes renminbi-denominated transactions directly using CNAPS for domestic leg settlement. Bank of China, ICBC, China Construction Bank, and Agricultural Bank of China are the Big Four state-owned correspondents, while CIPS now has over 1,400 direct and indirect participants across 110 countries.
| RTGS / Settlement System | CNAPS (China National Advanced Payment System) / CIPS |

Most international banks still send CNY via SWIFT, which routes through a CIPS-connected correspondent bank in China for the final leg. CIPS is faster for direct participants but requires your sending bank to have a CIPS relationship. Ask your bank which route they use.
Provide the 16-digit bank card number or full bank account number, the bank's SWIFT/BIC code, the branch name, and — for CIPS payments — the CNAPS code. Include the beneficiary's full name in Chinese characters and English, plus the purpose of payment.
Chinese banks are required to report cross-border transactions under strict SAFE (State Administration of Foreign Exchange) regulations. Transactions above the equivalent of USD 50,000 require documentation of the underlying trade or investment purpose.
