Santander is a major international bank with operations across Europe, the Americas, and beyond — processing millions of international wires annually. Here is how to locate your UETR and track a Santander wire transfer in real time.
Santander UK: log in to Online Banking, go to "Payments & transfers" → "Your payment history" and find the international wire. Click the payment for details. The SWIFT reference (UETR) may appear under "Transaction reference" — look for a 36-character code with hyphens. If not visible online, call Santander UK on 03303031101 (international: +44 1908 523805) and ask specifically for the "UETR from MT103 field 121" for your payment.
Santander Spain (Banco Santander): log in to Santander Online (particulares.santander.es), go to "Movimientos" → find your international transfer → "Detalle" → look for "Referencia SWIFT" or "UETR". Alternatively, go to any Santander branch with your DNI/NIE and the approximate payment date — branch staff can retrieve the UETR from their SWIFT operations system.
Santander US: Santander US has full GPI capabilities for business accounts (through Santander Connect) but retail online banking shows limited SWIFT detail. For Santander US wires, call 1-877-768-2265 (international banking support) and request the SWIFT MT103 and UETR for your transfer.
Santander as a SWIFT network participant: Santander's global BICs include BSCHESMM (Spain), ABBYGB2L (Santander UK — formerly Abbey National), SVRNUS33 (Santander US). Santander Spain uses Banco Santander's global correspondent network which includes direct relationships in Latin America — making Santander often the fastest and cheapest option for Spain/Europe to Latin America wires.
Common Santander wire delays: Santander applies AML and OFAC screening. Santander UK has one of the earlier GBP cut-off times (15:00 GMT for same-day CHAPS) — wires submitted after 15:00 UK time will value-date the next business day. For Spain, SEPA transfers cut off at ~17:30 CET for same-day TARGET2. Cross-border non-SEPA wires to Latin America, Asia, and Africa can take 2–4 days due to multiple correspondent hops.
Santander UK to Europe (SEPA): same business day if before 15:00 GMT. Santander Spain to EU: same day if before 17:30 CET. International (non-SEPA): 2–4 business days for major destinations, up to 5 for less common corridors.
"Pending" usually means the payment has been authorised but not yet dispatched — it is sitting in Santander's SWIFT queue. This is normal for up to 4 hours during business hours. After 24 hours in "pending", call the international payments team and ask them to confirm whether the SWIFT MT103 has been submitted.
Santander UK can send to most SWIFT-accessible countries. Sanctions mean they cannot send to certain jurisdictions (currently Russia, Iran, North Korea, Belarus, Cuba, and others). Santander applies enhanced due diligence for transfers to FATF grey-listed countries.
