Frequently asked questions

Why does IBAN length differ?

Each country defines its own IBAN length — Germany 22, France 27, UK 22, Saudi Arabia 24, etc.

What is MOD-97 validation?

IBANs include 2 check digits computed by the MOD-97 algorithm. Ohmyfin recomputes the check digits and flags any mismatch — a common defence against typos.

Does the validator confirm the account holder?

No. The validator only confirms the IBAN is well-formed and identifies the issuing bank. Account-holder confirmation requires a Confirmation-of-Payee service from your bank.

Is a US bank account an IBAN?

No. The United States does not use IBAN — US accounts are identified by ABA routing number + account number. IBAN is used across the EU, Middle East and parts of Asia and Latin America.

Can I derive the BIC from the IBAN?

For some countries yes (the bank code is embedded in the IBAN). For others, no. Ohmyfin returns the BIC when it can be derived deterministically.
