Zelle Payment Tracker — Status Guide (US Only)
Zelle is a US-only instant bank-to-bank payment network run by the major US banks. It is not a cross-border service and there is no SWIFT/UETR. Tracking is done inside your bank's app under the Zelle activity tab.
What each status means
| Sent / Completed | Recipient has received the funds in their US bank account (usually within seconds). |
| Pending | Recipient hasn't enrolled their email/phone with Zelle yet. They have 14 days; otherwise it auto-cancels. |
| Failed | Bank declined the transfer — usually wrong recipient details, recipient bank not on the network, or fraud rule trigger. |
| Cancelled | Either the sender cancelled (only possible while Pending) or the 14-day enrolment window expired. |
Frequently asked questions
Does Zelle work internationally?
No. Zelle is US domestic only — sender and receiver both need a US bank account enrolled with Zelle. For cross-border use Wise, Remitly, Western Union or a SWIFT bank wire.
Can I cancel a Zelle payment?
Only if the recipient hasn't enrolled yet (Pending status). Once Completed, Zelle is final — you must contact the recipient or your bank's fraud team.
Why is my Zelle payment Pending for days?
The recipient hasn't enrolled their email/phone with Zelle. Ask them to enrol — the payment will land within seconds once they do. After 14 days it auto-returns.
Zelle scam — how do I recover funds?
Contact your bank immediately and ask for a Reg E claim. As of 2024, the major US banks reimburse Zelle scam losses where impersonation is proven, but you must report it within 60 days.
