Frequently asked questions
What is the difference between SWIFT and SEPA?
SWIFT is the global standard for cross-border payments in any currency; SEPA is a euro-only scheme for 36 European countries. SEPA transfers are usually cheaper and faster within Europe, but SWIFT is required for any non-euro or non-European payment.
What is the difference between UETR and TRN?
A TRN (Transaction Reference Number, SWIFT field 20) is assigned by the sender's bank and is not guaranteed to be globally unique. A UETR (field 121) is a globally unique 36-character UUID generated at the originating bank and carried through every hop, enabling end-to-end GPI tracking.
What is the difference between BIC and IBAN?
A BIC identifies a specific bank or branch (institution-level), while an IBAN identifies an individual bank account (account-level). International wire transfers typically require both: the BIC routes the payment to the correct bank, and the IBAN routes it to the correct account.
What is the difference between MT103 and MT202?
MT103 is used for customer credit transfers (bank on behalf of a customer sending money to another customer). MT202 is used for bank-to-bank cover payments, typically to move funds between correspondent accounts to settle an MT103 payment on a different leg of the same transaction.
