MT202 is the SWIFT message type for general bank-to-bank funds transfer. Customers do not see MT202s on their statements — only their banks do — but every MT103 customer credit usually has an MT202 cover behind it.
Details
MT202COV is a critical variant: it carries the underlying customer details (originator and beneficiary) so that intermediary banks can perform sanctions and AML screening on the cover payment, not just the customer leg. Most regulators now mandate MT202COV (not plain MT202) for cover payments.
