How do I trace a lost SWIFT payment?

Last reviewed: · Curated by Ohmyfin Organisation editorial.

Track the UETR on Ohmyfin — this is step one and usually resolves the mystery within seconds. If the UETR is not found, ask the sender to confirm the UETR from their bank directly. If the UETR is found but stuck, file an MT199 enquiry. If the payment shows as credited but the beneficiary hasn't received it, ask the beneficiary to call their bank with the UETR — the credit may be in a suspense account.

Completely free for individuals — no daily limit, no signup required.

Details

A payment labelled 'lost' is almost always one of four situations: (1) not yet released by the sender's bank, (2) stuck at a correspondent for compliance review, (3) rejected and silently returned, or (4) credited to the beneficiary's bank but not posted to the account.

The UETR is the universal tracer. Every SWIFT GPI payment has one and it is queryable at every bank in the chain. Paste the UETR into Ohmyfin and the status will tell you which of the four scenarios applies.

If the UETR returns 'not found': the payment hasn't entered SWIFT yet. The sender should confirm with their bank that the payment was actually released (not just instructed or queued internally).

If ACSP at a correspondent: the payment is in transit. File an MT199 enquiry through the sender's bank. Under GPI rules, the correspondent must respond within 2 business days.

If RJCT: the payment was rejected and is being returned. The reason code tells you why.

If ACSC/ACCC but missing from the beneficiary's account: the beneficiary must call their bank quoting the UETR. The credit may be in a suspense account due to a name mismatch, a compliance review, or a pending account verification.
