Details

OUR (All Charges from Sender): the originating bank collects the total estimated correspondent chain cost upfront from the sender. The beneficiary receives the full face amount. This costs the sender more, but gives certainty on the beneficiary side — useful for business payments where the invoice amount must match exactly.

SHA (Shared Charges): the most common option. The sender pays their own bank's outgoing fee, and each correspondent and the beneficiary bank deducts their fee from the payment amount in transit. The beneficiary receives the payment minus all deductions. Total cost is shared across the chain.

BEN (All Charges from Beneficiary): the originating bank sends the payment without collecting any fee upfront. Every bank in the chain deducts its cost from the payment amount, and the final beneficiary receives the remainder. Rarely used because it makes the sender appear to be getting a fee reduction while the beneficiary bears all costs.

ISO 20022 equivalents: in pacs.008 the charge bearer is in the <ChrgBr> element: DEBT (= OUR), SHAR (= SHA), CRED (= BEN), SLEV (service-level default).
