Track a payment from an MT103
Use this guide when your sender or bank gave you an MT103 document and you need to identify the right reference before tracking the payment.
Details
An MT103 is a SWIFT message used for a single customer credit transfer. It is evidence of the instruction banks exchanged, but it is not by itself proof that the beneficiary account was credited. The most useful end-to-end tracking identifier is the UETR in block 3, field 121.
Do not confuse field 121 with field 20. Field 20 is the sender's transaction reference and may be useful to the sending bank, but it is not guaranteed to identify the payment across every correspondent. Field 121 contains the 36-character UETR that stays constant from origin to destination.
To track the payment, locate {121:xxxxxxxx-xxxx-4xxx-xxxx-xxxxxxxxxxxx}, copy only the value, and submit it to the tracker. Then compare the returned status and event time with fields 32A (value date, currency and amount), 50 (ordering customer), 59 (beneficiary), 56/57 (intermediary and account-with institutions) and 71A (charge instruction).
If the message has no field 121, ask the sending bank for its GPI confirmation rather than editing or guessing a reference. If the tracker reports rejection or an extended hold, send the exact status and UETR back to the sending bank so its investigations team can contact the bank currently handling the payment.
Key facts
- Field 121: UETR used for end-to-end tracking
- Field 20: sender reference, primarily useful inside the sending bank
- Field 32A: value date, currency and instructed amount
- Fields 56 and 57: intermediary and beneficiary-side institutions
- An MT103 confirms an instruction, not final beneficiary credit
Frequently asked questions
Which MT103 field should I track?
Use the UETR in block 3, field 121. It is normally a 36-character UUID. Field 20 is a different, sender-assigned reference.
Does an MT103 prove the money arrived?
No. It records the payment instruction. A credited tracking status or confirmation from the beneficiary bank is stronger evidence that funds reached the destination.
Can I track with field 20?
Some sources may recognize a sender reference, but field 20 is bank-specific. Ask for field 121 when you need reliable end-to-end identification.
What should I do if field 121 is missing?
Ask the sending bank for the SWIFT GPI confirmation or the complete UETR. Do not construct one yourself; it must match the identifier attached to the actual payment.
